Marco Rubio has accused the Cuban authorities of opening the country's territory to the intelligence services of nations hostile to the United States, asserting that such activities will no longer be tolerated.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Rubio made these remarks during an interview with Fox News. He emphasized that the United States would take a decisive stand against foreign interference in the region.
"We will not allow foreign military, intelligence, or security services to operate with impunity just 90 miles from our shores," Rubio stated. While his comments did not explicitly name specific nations, international media outlets have highlighted Cuba's historical cooperation with the former USSR and its ongoing strategic ties with Russia and China.
Rubio further noted that economic advancement in Cuba is contingent upon fundamental reforms, arguing that the island's current administrative model is incapable of ensuring growth. US President Donald Trump has also maintained a rigorous stance on Cuba, reiterating his administration's intent to pursue a firm policy in the region amid concerns over a potential economic crisis in the Caribbean nation.
The geopolitical tension between Washington and Havana has been a cornerstone of Western Hemisphere diplomacy for over six decades. The proximity of Cuba to the United States remains a critical factor in American national security strategy, particularly concerning the presence of adversarial military or surveillance assets in the Atlantic basin. This latest warning reflects a broader strategy to limit the influence of extra-regional powers near US borders.
