The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the return of an Iranian national who was imprisoned in France on charges related to her pro-Palestinian advocacy.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Tasnim news agency, Mahdiyeh Esfandiari returned to Tehran after being held in French custody for approximately 14 months. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Esfandiari upon her arrival in the capital, expressing his satisfaction with her release and commending her resilience during the period of detention.
During the meeting, Esfandiari provided details regarding her time in prison and expressed her gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Iranian diplomatic missions in Paris for their efforts in securing her release. Araghchi highlighted that the protection of the rights of Iranian citizens abroad is a primary objective for the state. Esfandiari was reportedly detained in France over a year ago due to her social media activity and public statements concerning the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The case underscores the complex diplomatic landscape between Iran and European nations regarding the legal treatment of activists and foreign nationals. Esfandiari's release follows a period of sustained diplomatic engagement aimed at addressing the legal status of Iranian citizens abroad. The incident has drawn attention to the intersection of international law, freedom of expression, and the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding the conflict in the Middle East.
