A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has occurred off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) released data regarding the seismic activity in the Pacific region.

The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 483 kilometers from the country's capital, Port Moresby, with the source recorded at a depth of 78 kilometers. According to preliminary reports, there have been no immediate accounts of casualties or significant infrastructure damage resulting from the tremors.

Papua New Guinea is situated on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Ocean which is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The region experiences high seismic activity due to the collision of several tectonic plates, including the Pacific and Australian plates. While deep-sea earthquakes of this magnitude often pose a lower risk of surface destruction, local authorities remain vigilant regarding potential aftershocks or localized impacts.
