A 6.5 magnitude earthquake has struck the Lorengau region of Papua New Guinea, according to reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Reuters, that the seismic event occurred at a depth of 47.8 kilometers. As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant infrastructure damage resulting from the tremors.
Papua New Guinea is situated along the "Pacific Ring of Fire," a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Due to its location on the boundary of several tectonic plates, the region frequently experiences seismic activity, necessitating robust disaster preparedness protocols and continuous monitoring by international geological agencies to mitigate risks to local populations.
