Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused European countries of persuading Washington to abandon the Anchorage agreements and delaying efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that foreign media outlets cited the diplomat’s remarks at an inter-embassy roundtable dedicated to the situation surrounding Ukraine.
According to the reports, Lavrov referred to preliminary agreements reached by the Russian and US leaders in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025, and said the conflict could have ended a year ago. “If the Americans had not withdrawn from the Anchorage agreements, and if Europe had not pushed the United States away from these agreements, we would have already been living without war for a year. This is an obvious fact. Therefore, draw your conclusions,” the minister said.
He claimed that Moscow had accepted settlement proposals put forward by the United States, but that Washington had subsequently changed its position as a result of pressure from its Western allies.
Russia has again confirmed that it remains open to diplomatic dialogue and is ready to participate in negotiations in both bilateral and trilateral formats. The Anchorage summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, held at Elmendorf-Richardson Joint Base on Aug. 15, 2025, had been viewed as one of the main discussion platforms for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Anchorage, Alaska, has previously hosted high-level international meetings because of its geographic position between Europe and Asia.
