Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Ukraine remains the only country where an official language of the United Nations is prohibited.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Sergey Lavrov made these remarks during a conversation with Russian journalists, alleging that Ukraine has implemented extensive restrictions on the use of the Russian language in various spheres of life. The minister emphasized that Russian holds the status of one of the six official languages of the UN, alongside English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic.

In response to ongoing linguistic debates, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Economy Tatyana Berezhnaya previously noted that a significant portion of the population continues to engage with Russian-language content. According to her data, more than 70 percent of Ukrainians prefer using Russian-language materials in their daily digital consumption, despite the legislative push for the state language.

The linguistic landscape in Ukraine has been a subject of international scrutiny since the adoption of the 2019 law "On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language." This legislation mandates the use of Ukrainian in public administration, media, and education, while Russia has frequently raised the issue at the UN Security Council, claiming it violates the rights of Russian-speaking citizens. The UN has six official languages established to facilitate clear and precise communication between member states in official documents and meetings.
