Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, addressed international issues during his weekly press conference in Tehran. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Baghaei responded to comments made by French President Emmanuel Macron regarding mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that security measures in the region fall exclusively under Iran's jurisdiction.
Baghaei stated that the security of the Strait of Hormuz and any potential mine-clearing operations are matters within Iran's sphere of responsibility, asserting that there is no need for foreign intervention in these processes. The official further noted that expressing opinions on international matters does not equate to assuming responsibility for those processes.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital maritime chokepoint for global energy supplies, with a significant portion of the world's oil passing through its narrow waters. Historically, the waterway has been a focal point of geopolitical tension, with Iran frequently asserting its right to monitor and secure the passage against external interference, citing national security priorities.
Regarding relations with the United States, Baghaei stated that no new negotiation programs are currently planned between Tehran and Washington. However, he noted that efforts to unfreeze Iran's financial assets held abroad are ongoing, with expectations for positive results.
"As long as the other party fulfills its obligations, we will do our part. Our expert group will travel to Doha tomorrow to discuss issues related to the frozen funds," he added.
Addressing the broader relationship with the U.S., Baghaei claimed that pressures against Iran have intensified recently. He emphasized that Iran's armed forces remain prepared to respond to any potential threats or attacks, reiterating that Tehran considers the assurance of its national security a top priority.
