The Kura River has breached a dam in the Aghjabadi district of Azerbaijan following several days of heavy rainfall. The incident was recorded at the confluence of the Kura and Gargar rivers near the village of Najafgulubayli, creating an immediate threat to the surrounding coastal areas.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the breach occurred after the water level in the Kura River rose significantly above the seasonal norm. Relevant government agencies, including teams from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, were immediately alerted and dispatched to the site. Local authorities reported that the situation is currently under control, with emergency measures being taken to prevent further flooding and reinforce the damaged section of the embankment.
The Kura River is the primary waterway in Azerbaijan and plays a critical role in the country's irrigation and ecosystem. However, the Kura-Araz lowland is historically prone to flooding during periods of intense precipitation. To address these risks, the government of Azerbaijan has been actively investing in the modernization of hydraulic structures and the reinforcement of riverbanks to ensure the safety of residential settlements and agricultural infrastructure in the region.
