The Kura River has overflowed its banks in the Suqovushan area of the Sabirabad district following a period of intense rainfall in Azerbaijan.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reported that the sharp increase in water levels caused the river to spill into the Tugay forest areas, particularly near the confluence of the Kura and Araz rivers. Local authorities noted that the water has begun spreading toward commercial zones, including several restaurants located along the riverbank.
The Sabirabad District Emergency Situations Commission stated that the situation is currently under control. According to official statements, despite the overflow, there is no immediate threat to nearby residential areas as the water level remains approximately two meters below the protective dams. Relevant government agencies are continuing their monitoring efforts and have implemented necessary preventive measures to ensure public safety.
The Kura River is the primary waterway of Azerbaijan, originating in Turkey and flowing through Georgia before entering the Caspian Sea. The Sabirabad district, where the Kura meets its largest tributary, the Araz, is geographically significant and historically prone to seasonal fluctuations. Azerbaijani authorities, including the Ministry of Emergency Situations, frequently conduct embankment reinforcement and dredging operations in the Kura-Araz lowland to manage the risk of flooding during periods of high precipitation and snowmelt.
