An Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vessel has attacked a container ship off the coast of Oman, according to reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the UKMTO statement, reported that the incident took place approximately 15 nautical miles (28 km) northeast of Oman. The ship's captain confirmed that an IRGC boat approached the container ship and opened fire, resulting in significant damage to the captain's bridge. Despite the severity of the armed encounter, the UKMTO stated that no fire or environmental damage was recorded, and all crew members are currently safe.
This maritime incident occurs against a backdrop of severe regional instability. On February 28, military operations were launched against Iran by the United States and Israel, leading to a sharp escalation of tensions across the Middle East and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz. While a temporary ceasefire was reached between Iran, the U.S., and their allies on April 8, 2026, the agreement expired on the night of April 21-22. Subsequent diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Pakistan on April 11-12 concluded without a breakthrough. In response to the deadlock, US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran has countered by declaring a blockade on vessels heading toward Persian Gulf countries, further fueling a global energy crisis.
