UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sent a formal message to the 31st "Baku Energy Week," underscoring the strong bilateral ties and shared climate goals between the two nations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the letter was read by David Reed, the British Trade Commissioner for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
In his address to President Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Starmer stated: "Dear President Aliyev, I am pleased to extend my sincere greetings to everyone participating in the 2026 'Baku Energy Week.' In a period of global uncertainty, Azerbaijan remains a vital partner in strengthening international energy security and stability."
The Prime Minister highlighted Azerbaijan's significant progress in the energy transition, noting, "When we visited Baku for COP29 eighteen months ago, I was deeply impressed by the serious attention Azerbaijan has given to the energy transition. Since then, plans have turned into action, with renewable energy production accelerating and extensive solutions being presented for the transport of green energy both onshore and offshore."
Starmer further emphasized Azerbaijan's role in supporting European energy resilience, particularly in the face of ongoing challenges. "Your country has played a crucial role in strengthening Ukraine's energy resilience in the face of Russia's sustained and illegal attacks on its energy infrastructure. Your country has created opportunities for European nations to build their own energy resilience through the diversification of supply chains. Furthermore, last year, your country began exporting energy to Armenia, reinforcing your commitment to long-term peace," the letter read.
Regarding future cooperation, the Prime Minister noted that the UK remains committed to working alongside Azerbaijan to accelerate the global energy transition, which is essential for strengthening climate resilience and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
"Our long-term energy partnership, led by British industry, will serve as a cornerstone of our bilateral relations and will continue to act as a driver of growth in both economies. By combining our expert skills in renewable energy and clean technologies, we can foster the innovation necessary to achieve net-zero and ensure a prosperous, sustainable future," Starmer concluded, praising President Aliyev's leadership in these initiatives.
The "Baku Energy Week" is a premier international event that brings together global energy leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss the future of the energy sector, decarbonization strategies, and the role of the Caspian region in global energy security.
