A military base used by international coalition forces in the Erbil region of Iraq has come under armed attack, resulting in casualties among service members.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that French President Emmanuel Macron has officially confirmed the death of one French soldier following the strike. The President described the incident as "unacceptable" and emphasized that French forces have been operating in the region since 2015 with the sole purpose of combating terrorism.

The deceased serviceman has been identified as Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion of the 7th Alpine Hunter Battalion. According to the Erbil Governor's office, five other individuals sustained minor injuries during the assault, four of whom have been hospitalized for treatment. Military personnel from other coalition nations, including Italy, were also present at the base during the time of the attack.

While no group has officially claimed responsibility, regional observers and security analysts suggest that pro-Iranian militia groups are likely behind the escalation. This incident occurs amid a complex security landscape in Iraq, where international coalition forces continue to support local authorities in maintaining stability and preventing the resurgence of extremist organizations like ISIS. Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, has frequently been a focal point for such geopolitical tensions due to its strategic importance and the presence of foreign diplomatic and military missions.
