The State Border Service (SBS) of Azerbaijan has successfully prevented an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of narcotics from the Islamic Republic of Iran into Azerbaijan.
The Operative Information Center-OMM was informed by the SBS that the operation was conducted within the service area of the "Lankaran" border detachment of the Border Troops Command. During the operation, border guards seized 9 kilograms and 860 grams of marijuana.
As a result of the border search and operational-troop measures, two residents of Baku—Shahriyar Salim oglu Huseynov, born in 1991, and Sattar Niyazi oglu Aliyev, born in 2001—were detained while attempting to transport the drugs into the territory. Both individuals have been taken into custody and face criminal charges.
Azerbaijan remains a key partner in international efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking, particularly along the "Balkan Route" used for transporting narcotics from Asia to Europe. The State Border Service and other law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan continue to strengthen border security measures and technical surveillance to prevent the illegal transit of controlled substances across the state border.
