Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that the United States' hegemonic approach and double standards remain the primary obstacles to reaching a fair agreement between Tehran and Washington.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the president's official website released this information on Monday following high-level diplomatic discussions.
During a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, Pezeshkian noted that an agreement is achievable if the United States adheres to the principles of international law. He also expressed gratitude to the Kremlin for opposing the recent UN Security Council resolution directed against Iran.
The statement comes on the sixth day of a declared two-week ceasefire between the parties, following inconclusive negotiations held in Islamabad involving mediators. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf attributed the failure of those talks to the US side's inability to build trust with the Iranian delegation. Furthermore, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized on the X social platform that while Tehran entered negotiations in good faith, the agreement stalled due to shifting American demands.
The geopolitical situation remains tense as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy warned that any military vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz would be viewed as a violation of the ceasefire and met with force. These developments occur against the backdrop of a shifting global political landscape, including the administration of US President Donald Trump, which took office in January 2025, and ongoing international efforts to manage regional security in the Middle East.
