The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has announced the detention of two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the incident occurred on Friday morning after the vessels reportedly ignored warnings from Iranian forces.
In an official statement, the IRGC claimed that the tankers were operating under the guidance of the US Central Command (CENTCOM). The Iranian military alleged that the vessels were attempting to transit the strait via unauthorized routes while under the aerial escort of US military forces.
The IRGC stated that both tankers were detained after failing to comply with repeated warnings. During the operation, four other tankers reportedly altered their courses and returned to their previous positions in response to the situation. Iranian authorities asserted that the measure was taken to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz and to enforce compliance with international maritime regulations.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global maritime chokepoint, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Approximately one-fifth of the world's oil consumption passes through this narrow waterway, making it a critical focal point for international energy security and geopolitical tensions in the region.
