At least 16 people have been killed following a collision between a passenger bus and a fuel tanker on Sumatra island, Indonesia.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the information was released by the Xinhua news agency. Representatives from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) stated that emergency rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to extricate victims trapped within the wreckage of the vehicles.

Road accidents are relatively common in Indonesia, often attributed to aging infrastructure and varying safety standards across the archipelago. Sumatra, one of the country's largest and most populous islands, frequently experiences heavy traffic involving both public transport and industrial vehicles. Local law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision and whether mechanical failure or driver error contributed to the tragedy.
