Azerbaijan not only meets its own domestic demand but also supplies nitrogen fertilizers to numerous foreign countries due to the operations of its carbamide plant, President Ilham Aliyev said.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev made these remarks during a meeting dedicated to agricultural issues. The head of state noted that nitrogen fertilizer represents only one type of agricultural input. "We need many types of fertilizers. Therefore, discussions are currently underway with several foreign companies regarding the establishment of mixed fertilizer production in Azerbaijan and ensuring the continuous import of fertilizers to our country, as the global market situation remains highly uncertain," the President emphasized. He added that some global fertilizer plants have shut down due to soaring natural gas prices making production economically unviable, which has triggered shortages. "From a pragmatic standpoint, we must understand that we cannot produce all types of fertilizers, but we must expand their range," President Ilham Aliyev concluded.
The SOCAR Carbamide Plant, inaugurated in 2019 in Sumgait, plays a pivotal role in Azerbaijan's agricultural and industrial export strategy. By utilizing local natural gas as a primary raw material, the plant has significantly reduced the country's dependence on fertilizer imports while generating substantial export revenues. The diversification of fertilizer production aligns with Azerbaijan's broader economic strategy to bolster food security and support the agricultural sector amid fluctuating global commodity markets.
