Germany has approved the extradition of a suspect accused of intentional murder to Azerbaijan following a formal request from the Prosecutor General's Office. Elshan Shamilov Hasan oglu, a Georgian citizen, was detained on German territory after being placed on an international wanted list for crimes committed over three decades ago.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the extradition was granted in accordance with the requirements of the European Convention on Extradition dated December 13, 1957. Investigations conducted by the Narimanov District Prosecutor's Office in Baku suggest that Shamilov, acting in conspiracy with Afghan Aliyev and Hidayat Hasanov, committed a fatal home invasion on July 30, 1993, resulting in the death of one individual. Shamilov was declared internationally wanted via the Interpol National Central Bureau in Azerbaijan on May 8, 2025, after evading the initial investigation.
The extradition process is currently being finalized by the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan to ensure the suspect's return to the country for trial. This case highlights the long-term legal cooperation between Azerbaijan and European law enforcement agencies in addressing transnational crime and ensuring that individuals accused of serious offenses face justice, regardless of the time elapsed. Azerbaijan has been an active participant in international legal assistance frameworks, maintaining robust ties with Interpol and European judicial authorities to facilitate the return of fugitives.
