Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, has sharply criticized the US administration's recent statements regarding negotiations with Tehran.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Ghalibaf characterized Washington's current stance as "theater diplomacy" in a statement released via his social media account.
Ghalibaf asserted that recent remarks by US President Donald Trump concerning Iran do not reflect reality, claiming that promises remain unfulfilled and that the US is pursuing a failed strategy based on misinformation. He urged the American administration to acknowledge geopolitical realities and adhere to its international commitments.
Simultaneously, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei announced that Tehran has reached a strategic understanding with Oman regarding the coordination of shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. He indicated that, provided there is no interference from third parties such as the US or Israel, a joint statement regarding this arrangement will be issued in the near future.
According to Reuters, this agreement could potentially strengthen Iran's control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Reports suggest that Tehran is considering implementing a transit fee of 5-7 percent of cargo value for commercial vessels passing through the strait, while Oman is reportedly negotiating to reduce this figure to 3 percent.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, serving as a primary route for global oil and gas shipments. US President Donald Trump has previously stated that the US would not allow Iran to generate revenue through the imposition of levies on traffic passing through the strait, setting the stage for potential future tensions in the region.
