Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has held a telephone conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, to discuss the recent drone strikes on Azerbaijani territory.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan released information regarding the diplomatic exchange. During the call, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov strongly condemned the drone attacks launched from Iran into the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, expressing a firm protest against these actions.
The Azerbaijani minister emphasized that such strikes on the territory of Azerbaijan are in direct violation of the norms and principles of international law and serve only to escalate tensions within the region. In response, the Iranian minister expressed his concern regarding the incident and informed that Iranian authorities and military officials have launched an investigation. Araghchi also extended his wishes for the recovery of the injured civilians.
Baku has formally communicated its expectations for a full apology from the Iranian side, a swift explanation regarding the results of the investigation, and the implementation of necessary measures to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, shares a significant border with Iran, and maintaining security along this frontier remains a priority for the regional stability of the South Caucasus.
