Elchin Amirbayov, Representative of the President of Azerbaijan on Special Assignments, has held a series of high-level meetings in Prague during an official working visit to the Czech Republic. Amirbayov met with Hynek Kmoníček, National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister; Jiří Brodský, First Deputy Foreign Minister; Lucie Nebesářová, Acting Director of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration; and Jiří Skopeček, Vice-Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the discussions focused on the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic. Both sides emphasized the pivotal role of the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed in 2015. The parties recalled with satisfaction the meeting between
President Ilham Aliyev
and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš held in January 2026 on the sidelines of the Davos Economic Forum, stressing the importance of maintaining high-level contacts in the near future.The Czech officials expressed strong interest in intensifying political dialogue and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, transport, and defense. The Czech side characterized Azerbaijan as a strategic gateway for the European Union to Central Asia and a vital transport hub along the Middle Corridor. Furthermore, Elchin Amirbayov provided a detailed briefing on the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including the agreements reached in Washington on August 8, 2025. He noted that the upcoming parliamentary elections and constitutional referendum in Armenia would be decisive factors in achieving a final and irreversible peace treaty.
The Czech Republic and Azerbaijan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1993, with ties evolving into a strategic partnership over the last decade. As a key member of the European Union, the Czech Republic views Azerbaijan as an essential partner in diversifying Europe’s energy supplies, particularly through the Southern Gas Corridor. This visit underscores Baku's proactive diplomacy in Europe to garner support for regional stability and to strengthen economic integration between the South Caucasus and Central Europe.
