The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to expand rapidly. The international humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has declared the situation critical, urging an immediate and significant escalation in the response to the disease.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, official statistics indicate that the number of confirmed Ebola cases has tripled over the last five weeks, reaching 1,926. The death toll attributed to the virus has risen to 702.

MSF reports that this outbreak is considered one of the third-largest and fastest-spreading Ebola epidemics in history. The organization currently manages seven Ebola treatment centers and more than 15 isolation units across the country. The geographical spread of the virus is widening, with the situation exacerbated by limited access to medical services in remote settlements.

Trish Newport, Emergency Programs Manager at MSF, stated that current containment measures are failing to keep pace with the virus's transmission rate. She has called on the international community to engage in more coordinated and rapid action.

The Ebola virus, currently spreading via the Bundibugyo strain, is characterized by severe symptoms, including high fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the epidemic remains in an expansion phase, citing population migration and delays in treatment as contributing factors. Meanwhile, the US administration has advised its citizens in the Democratic Republic of Congo to consider departing the country via commercial flights.

Ebola, first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River, remains one of the world's most virulent diseases. Outbreaks in the DRC are frequently complicated by regional instability and logistical challenges in reaching affected rural populations, making international cooperation essential for containment.
