Iran must provide a prompt explanation for the recent drone attacks targeting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.
Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized this requirement during a telephone conversation with his Uzbek counterpart, Bakhtiyor Saidov, Operative Information Center-OMM reports.
During the discussion, it was noted that the Azerbaijani side demands that Iran clarify the circumstances of the attack within a short period. Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stressed the necessity of providing a formal explanation and taking urgent measures to ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of March 5, when drones launched from Iranian territory entered Azerbaijani airspace. One drone struck the terminal building of the Nakhchivan International Airport, while another landed near a school building in the village of Shekarabad. The strikes resulted in injuries to two individuals and caused damage to civilian infrastructure.
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, maintains strategic importance in the region. This incident follows a period of diplomatic efforts to normalize relations between Baku and Tehran. Azerbaijan has consistently advocated for regional stability and the protection of its sovereign borders, emphasizing that any violation of its territorial integrity or threats to its civilian population are unacceptable under international law.
