Nauru, the Pacific island nation, has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero to align with the spelling and pronunciation in the country's national language.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that international media outlets have confirmed the development. President David Adeang announced that the country's international code will transition from NRU to NRO, and citizens will now be referred to as "dei-Naoero" rather than "Nauruan."
The government stated on its Facebook page that the name change symbolizes a return to the country's traditional identity. While the nation has been internationally recognized as "Nauru," the local term "Naoero" is deeply rooted in the national heritage, appearing on the state emblem and within the constitution. President Adeang emphasized that this shift marks the beginning of a renewed sense of national pride.
With a population of approximately 12,000, Naoero is the world's third-smallest state, following Vatican City and Tuvalu. The island nation, which gained independence in 1968 after periods of German and Australian administration, currently faces significant environmental challenges, including rising sea levels due to climate change. To mitigate these risks, the government is implementing citizenship programs to fund the relocation of infrastructure and residents to higher ground.
