The Baku Grave Crimes Court has denied a request to place a teenager accused of shooting a teacher at the "Idrak" lyceum under house arrest.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the decision was announced during a hearing presided over by Judge Vugar Guliyev. The court noted that the victim was not present but was represented by legal counsel. During the proceedings, the court confirmed the defendant's personal details, noting he was born in Sumgait in 2010 and is a 10th-grade student at the lyceum.
The defendant's lawyer, Rashad Mirmehdizade, requested that the trial be held behind closed doors due to the defendant's minor status. Furthermore, the defense petitioned to replace the pre-trial detention with house arrest, arguing that the teenager did not fully grasp the nature of his actions at the time, has expressed remorse, and has reached a settlement with the victim. The victim's representative did not object to the request for house arrest, citing the settlement. However, the court denied the motion and scheduled the next hearing for July 1.
The incident occurred on February 6 at the private "Idrak" lyceum located in the Binagadi district of Baku. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the student opened fire with a firearm, injuring a teacher. The student was subsequently detained, and on February 7, the Binagadi District Court ordered a four-month pre-trial detention. A criminal case has been initiated under Article 29, 120.2.2 (attempted murder with hooligan intent) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
