The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has officially announced that Armenia and Georgia will co-host the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the decision was confirmed during the FIFA Council meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, where the joint bid from the two South Caucasus nations was approved.
The Football Federation of Armenia stated that hosting the tournament represents a historic milestone for the country, marking the first time it will organize a global football event of this scale. The project includes the construction of two new stadiums in the Lori region, specifically near the cities of Dilijan and Ijevan, to facilitate logistics near the Georgian border. In Armenia, matches are expected to take place across four venues, including the Republican Stadium in Yerevan, with plans for a new National Stadium also under consideration.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup is a biennial international men's youth football championship contested by the under-20 national teams of the member associations of FIFA. Since its inception in 1977, the tournament has served as a major platform for emerging talent, often featuring future stars of the sport. This joint hosting initiative follows a growing trend of regional cooperation in sports, similar to Georgia's successful co-hosting of the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, and is expected to drive significant infrastructure development in the region.
