Azerbaijani police officers have detained two individuals during a special operation while they were attempting to transport a large quantity of narcotics and psychotropic substances from Jalilabad to Baku.
According to information provided by the Lankaran regional group of the MIA Press Service to Operative Information Center-OMM, officers of the Jalilabad District Police Department carried out a successful operation against illegal drug trafficking. As a result, 27-year-old Royal Gulaghazade and previously convicted 23-year-old Simran Mursalov were apprehended.
During the inspection of the detainees, more than 11 kilograms of marijuana and methamphetamine were discovered and seized as evidence. Preliminary investigations revealed that Gulaghazade and Mursalov were recruited as drug couriers by an Iranian citizen, whose identity is currently being established. They agreed to deliver the drugs to specific addresses in Baku in exchange for financial gain.
A criminal case has been initiated at the Jalilabad District Police Department regarding the fact. A preventive measure of arrest has been chosen for the detainees, and investigations are currently ongoing to identify other members of the criminal network.
Drug trafficking remains a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan, particularly along the southern borders. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) continues to intensify its operations to prevent the transit of illegal substances through the country, which is often targeted by international drug syndicates due to its strategic geographical location between Asia and Europe.
