Azerbaijan will host World Environment Day (WED) on June 5 in Baku in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The event, which serves as a major global platform for environmental awareness, will be held under the theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Azerbaijan officially received the relay to host the global event during the 2024 proceedings held in the Republic of Korea. The ministry noted that the program will highlight Azerbaijan's ongoing efforts in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and the expansion of protected natural areas.

Established by the UN General Assembly in 1972, World Environment Day has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach, celebrated by millions of people across the world. This year's hosting is particularly significant as it follows the momentum of Azerbaijan hosting COP29, reinforcing the country's commitment to the Paris Agreement and its transition toward renewable energy. Both Azerbaijan and UNEP have invited international stakeholders to join the Baku event to foster collective action for environmental protection.
