Azerbaijan will host World Environment Day in June 2026, marking another significant milestone in the country's growing role in global environmental diplomacy.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Prime Minister Ali Asadov made the announcement during his speech at the "RES2026" regional environmental summit held in Astana. According to the Prime Minister, hosting this event will provide additional momentum to the global sustainable development agenda.
"Building on the experience of successfully hosting COP29, Azerbaijan is preparing to host the 13th World Urban Forum in May this year in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). Furthermore, in June, Azerbaijan will host World Environment Day 2026," Ali Asadov noted. He emphasized that Baku intends to utilize these platforms to unite international efforts in urban planning and ecology, as well as to advance the global sustainable development goals.
The Prime Minister further stressed the importance of strengthening joint efforts and ensuring a coordinated approach to addressing transboundary environmental issues. "Azerbaijan remains committed to the principles of international cooperation and is ready to actively contribute to the achievement of common goals," he added.
World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on June 5 since 1973, is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach. By hosting this event in 2026, Azerbaijan continues to solidify its position as a regional leader in green transition and climate action, following its successful presidency of the COP29 climate summit in Baku. These international forums serve as critical venues for nations to negotiate environmental policies and share technological innovations aimed at mitigating climate change.
