Azerbaijan evacuates 1,761 foreign nationals from Iran

Azerbaijan has facilitated the safe evacuation of 1,761 individuals from Iran via its land borders following the commencement of military operations by the United States and Israel on February 28. The evacuees represent a diverse group of foreign nationals seeking passage to safety amid the escalating regional instability.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Report, the evacuated individuals include citizens from 66 different countries. Official statistics indicate that between 08:00 on February 28 and 10:00 on March 7, a total of 297 citizens of Azerbaijan crossed the border back into the country. Among foreign nationals, the highest numbers were recorded for citizens of China (487), Russia (282), Tajikistan (173), and Pakistan (118).

The comprehensive list of evacuees also includes 57 citizens from Oman, 44 from Italy, 32 from Indonesia, 20 from Spain, 18 from Saudi Arabia, 21 from Iran, 16 from France, 13 from Georgia, and 10 each from Bulgaria and Congo. Smaller groups from Brazil, the United Kingdom, Belarus, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, Slovakia, Canada, Serbia, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and the Czech Republic were also processed. Furthermore, citizens from nearly 40 other nations, including Japan, Germany, and Turkey, were among those provided with a safe corridor through Azerbaijani territory.

This humanitarian operation underscores Azerbaijan's strategic role as a stable transit hub and its commitment to international safety protocols during regional crises. By maintaining open and secure border infrastructure, Azerbaijan continues to serve as a vital link for diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in Eurasia. The coordination involves multiple state agencies to ensure that all foreign nationals receive necessary assistance and documentation for their onward travel under the current geopolitical circumstances, particularly following the recent policy shifts under US President Donald Trump.
