The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan has issued an advisory to the public regarding unstable weather conditions expected in several regions of the country.
The ministry provided this information to the Operative Information Center-OMM.
According to the National Hydrometeorology Service, the forecast for the coming days includes intensive rainfall in certain areas, potential flash floods in some mountain rivers, lightning, and intermittent strong winds.
In light of these conditions, the Ministry of Emergency Situations has reiterated essential safety protocols:
- Flood and flash flood safety: Citizens are advised to stay clear of areas prone to flooding. If caught in such a situation, individuals should immediately move to higher ground.
- Lightning safety: It is recommended to disconnect electrical appliances, avoid using telephones (landline or mobile), and stay away from power lines, lightning rods, and antennas. When outdoors, avoid seeking shelter under tall trees; instead, choose lower-lying areas. If in a vehicle, stop, close the windows, and wait for the storm to pass.
- Wind safety: During periods of strong wind, avoid standing near light structures, temporary buildings, billboards, power poles, or tall trees.
- Fire and water safety: Given that strong winds complicate firefighting efforts, strict adherence to fire safety rules is mandatory. Furthermore, the ministry reminds the public that swimming in the sea during strong winds is dangerous, and operators of small vessels are prohibited from putting to sea under such weather conditions.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations is the primary government body in Azerbaijan responsible for disaster management, civil defense, and fire safety. These periodic warnings are part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to mitigate risks associated with the country's diverse climate, which can range from arid conditions to sudden, severe weather events in mountainous regions.
