Armenia is actively continuing its cooperation with various countries possessing advanced nuclear technologies regarding the construction of a new nuclear reactor in the country. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that these remarks were made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

"We are currently working with all our partners—France, the United States, Russia, South Korea, and China. Necessary decisions will be made once reliable answers to all possible questions are obtained," Pashinyan stated. The Prime Minister reminded that on August 8, 2025, a memorandum was signed in Washington with US President Donald Trump, which includes cooperation in the energy sector, specifically nuclear energy.

On October 1, 2025, Pashinyan announced a strategic decision that Armenia's next nuclear facility would be a small modular reactor (SMR). This shift toward SMR technology is part of a broader regional trend to modernize aging energy infrastructure. Currently, Armenia relies heavily on the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, which was built during the Soviet era. The transition to modular reactors is seen as a move to enhance energy security and replace older units with safer, more flexible technology through international partnerships with global nuclear leaders.
