Wildfires in Turkey’s Antalya province spread toward residential areas under the influence of strong winds. The fire broke out in Aksu district on Monday evening.
Authorities evacuated residents from at least 254 homes in Aksu and neighboring Kepez districts. The highway between Antalya and Isparta was temporarily closed, while more than 2,000 homes in the area lost electricity.
Two people were hospitalized with leg injuries. Six others who suffered smoke inhalation received medical treatment at the scene.
More than 100 dogs were evacuated from an animal shelter in Aksu and taken to a safe location due to the danger posed by the flames and heavy smoke, Antalya Municipality said.
At least five firefighting aircraft, 10 helicopters, 110 fire engines and around 600 personnel were deployed to battle the blaze.
Firefighters also fought fires in the neighboring provinces of Adana and Mersin. The Adana governor’s office said fires in the Çorlu neighborhood of Karaisalı district, the Mansurlu neighborhood of Feke district and the Dağılcak area of the Düzağaç neighborhood in Kozan district had been brought under control.
Firefighting and cooling operations continued after the fires. Approximately 132 hectares of forest were reportedly affected. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fires.
