Deepening disagreements between the United States and Israel regarding Iran policy have come to the forefront, as Washington prioritizes maintaining diplomatic channels while expressing concern over Israeli operations targeting Iranian officials.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from The Washington Post, the administration of US President Donald Trump has expressed serious concern over Israel's targeting of key Iranian negotiators. This comes at a time when the US is actively seeking to keep diplomatic channels with Tehran open.
Reports indicate that Washington sent warnings to Tehran through intermediaries earlier this spring regarding potential Israeli plans. US officials have reportedly voiced strong opposition to alleged assassination plots targeting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
An anonymous US official emphasized that such actions could weaken factions within Iran that are open to negotiations, warning that targeting these individuals would deal a significant blow to the diplomatic process.
Analysts suggest that Washington's direct warning highlights existing strategic divergences between the US and Israel. Aaron David Miller, a former US State Department official, noted that this situation demonstrates that the two allies are beginning to have differing objectives regarding the conflict.
While both nations initially shared the goal of regime change in Iran during the early stages of the conflict, their approaches have since diverged. The US has prioritized degrading Iran's maritime and missile capabilities, whereas Israel has focused on operations targeting political and military leadership. The killing of high-ranking Iranian security official Ali Larijani in mid-March is noted as a key event that further deepened the rift between Washington and Tel Aviv.
