Paramount Skydance has settled a lawsuit brought by dozens of US states, clearing a major hurdle to its proposed $110 billion merger with Warner Bros Discovery.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said officials had agreed to the settlement after securing commitments aimed at protecting competition in film, television and broadcasting, according to the BBC.
“The settlement is not a vote of support for this merger,” Bonta told a news conference. “It is not a blessing of the broader merger.”
Terms of the settlement
Under the agreement, Paramount must release at least 30 films a year, Bonta said. He added that the settlement would help increase film production in the United States.
The lawsuit had been filed by a coalition of states led by California, which raised concerns about the deal’s potential impact on competition across the entertainment industry.
Paramount says concerns have been addressed
Paramount chief executive David Ellison welcomed the settlement, saying the agreement was intended to serve consumers, workers and the creative community.
“Having now addressed the State AGs’ and WGA’s concerns, we have complete clearance for this merger and look forward to putting these commitments into action,” Ellison said, referring to the Writers Guild of America.
Ellison had previously threatened to move studio operations out of California.
