Ukraine and the United States have reached a political agreement regarding the acquisition of licenses for the production of Patriot air defense systems. This development follows high-level discussions aimed at bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed this information to journalists following the NATO summit held in Turkey and his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy noted that the political decision has already been finalized. Currently, the primary focus is on the operational efforts of technical teams and representatives from relevant ministries to secure the necessary licenses and initiate the production process. Kyiv anticipates the announcement of a new US military aid package in the coming days, which is expected to include PAC-3 Patriot missiles, considered highly effective against Russian ballistic missiles.
The Patriot missile system, developed by the US defense contractor Raytheon, is one of the world's most advanced air defense platforms. Its ability to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and advanced aircraft makes it a critical asset for national security. By localizing production, Ukraine aims to ensure a more sustainable supply chain for these defensive systems, which are vital for protecting Ukrainian cities and strategic infrastructure from persistent aerial attacks.
Furthermore, discussions regarding the joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) between Ukraine and the US are ongoing. While a final contract has not yet been signed, an agreement has been reached to prepare preliminary documentation for testing Ukrainian technologies, including air and maritime drones. Zelenskyy described his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump as constructive, noting a positive shift in the US leader's approach toward Ukraine, even as discussions regarding the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict continue.
