Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, has responded to statements made by Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna regarding potential military escalations involving Russia.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that during a briefing with journalists, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that such provocative statements require a high level of accountability. "I believe that such individuals must be held responsible for their words," Zakharova stated, addressing the recent rhetoric coming from Tallinn.
The tension follows earlier comments by Tsahkna, who indicated that the Estonian authorities could potentially agree to the deployment of NATO nuclear weapons on Estonian territory. The Estonian minister noted that there are currently no prohibitive doctrines preventing such a move, signaling a shift in the regional security posture.
Relations between Russia and the Baltic states, including Estonia, have reached historic lows following the escalation of regional geopolitical conflicts. Estonia, a member of both NATO and the European Union, has consistently advocated for a strengthened military presence on the alliance's eastern flank. The discussion regarding nuclear deployment marks a significant point of contention in the ongoing security dialogue between Moscow and NATO member states in Northern Europe.
