Severe forest fires currently raging across Greece have resulted in tragic casualties and widespread evacuations. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, three firefighters have lost their lives while battling the blazes.
Two of the firefighters were trapped and killed near the village of Krya Vrysi in the central part of the island of Crete. A third firefighter died during a separate fire incident in the Peloponnese region. The situation on Crete remains particularly critical, as strong winds are fueling the rapid spread of flames and severely hampering firefighting efforts.
Authorities have initiated evacuations for residents of Krya Vrysi and surrounding villages, as well as tourists in the area. As the fire approached the coastal town of Agia Galini, tourists were transported to safety via buses and private vehicles. Currently, more than 200 firefighters, supported by specialized equipment and aviation, are working to contain the inferno. Greek civil defense authorities have issued warnings regarding intensifying winds, cautioning that conditions may deteriorate further in the coming hours.
The European Union's Emergency Response Coordination Centre has highlighted that Greece and Italy face a high risk of wildfires in the near term, with Spain and France also battling blazes in recent days. Experts note that climate change, characterized by rising temperatures and prolonged droughts, is increasingly contributing to the frequency and rapid spread of forest fires across Europe.
