Japan has officially eased its decades-long restrictions on the export of lethal weapons, marking a significant shift in the country's post-war defense policy.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and senior officials announced the removal of several weapon export barriers during a cabinet meeting in Tokyo. As part of this strategic shift, Japan has already signed a record-breaking $6.5 billion contract with Australia for the sale of warships.

In a statement shared on the X platform, Prime Minister Takaichi noted that the decision was driven by an "extremely complex security situation." She emphasized that "no country can ensure its peace and security alone." According to reports from The New York Times, Japan aims to expand its defense industry and establish a broader network of allies amid growing global geopolitical uncertainties.

The new regulations allow Japanese defense companies to export lethal weaponry to 17 countries. However, the ban on selling arms to nations involved in active military conflicts remains in place, with exceptions only permitted in cases where Japan's national security is directly threatened. This move represents a major departure from Japan's traditional pacifist stance, reflecting the administration's goal to modernize its military-industrial complex and enhance regional stability through strategic partnerships.
