An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 occurred in the Caspian Sea on May 21. The seismic event was recorded at 05:47 local time, according to official data provided by regional monitoring stations.
The Bureau of Earthquake Research of the Republican Seismic Survey Center reported the incident to the Operative Information Center-OMM. Experts noted that the epicenter of the tremors was located at a depth of 20 kilometers. While the magnitude was relatively low, the event was monitored by the national seismic network to ensure there were no risks to coastal infrastructure or residential areas in Azerbaijan.
The Caspian Sea region is characterized by moderate seismic activity due to the complex tectonic interactions between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. Azerbaijan, situated on the western shore of the sea, frequently records minor tremors that are often imperceptible to the general public. The Republican Seismic Survey Center, which operates under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, maintains an extensive network of telemetry stations across the country to provide real-time data and ensure public safety during seismic events.
