Temporary special traffic lanes established on several streets and avenues in Baku for the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) will come into force starting tomorrow, May 15.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Azerbaijan Surface Transport Agency (AYNA) under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, the installation of road sign 5.9—designating lanes for public transport—has already commenced in the specified areas. From May 15, these temporary lanes will be strictly regulated to ensure the efficient movement of forum participants and public transport.
The temporary special lanes cover Heydar Aliyev Avenue, the Airport Highway, and Abbasgulu Agha Bakikhanov, Yusif Safarov, Mehdi Abbasov, Mikayil Aliyev, and Mikayil Mushfig streets. Under national legislation, these lanes hold the status of bus lanes; therefore, drivers of unauthorized vehicles entering these lanes during the enforcement period will be subject to administrative fines. Once the international event concludes, the signs will be removed, and standard traffic rules will be restored.
The World Urban Forum, established by the United Nations, is the premier global conference on sustainable urbanization. Hosting WUF13 in Baku underscores Azerbaijan's growing role as a hub for international dialogue and its commitment to sustainable urban development. The event brings together government officials, urban planners, and civil society leaders to discuss the future of cities, infrastructure, and environmental resilience in an increasingly urbanized world.
