French gendarmerie forces have conducted a search at the Paris offices of the U.S.-based social media company X (formerly Twitter).

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing international media outlets, that the raid is part of an ongoing judicial investigation launched in January 2025.

The Paris Prosecutor's Office has officially summoned X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who held her leadership position during the events under investigation, along with the platform's owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Both individuals are required to appear in Paris on April 20 to provide testimony regarding the platform's operations and compliance with local regulations.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the scope of the investigation was expanded following multiple criminal complaints. These complaints allege that "Grok," the artificial intelligence tool integrated into the X platform, has been used to disseminate "deepfake" content and material denying the Holocaust. The investigation aims to determine the extent of the platform's liability in hosting and promoting prohibited content under French law.

This legal action comes amid increasing scrutiny of major technology firms in the European Union, where the Digital Services Act (DSA) mandates strict moderation of illegal content and disinformation. France has been particularly proactive in enforcing national and EU-wide digital safety standards, previously engaging in high-profile legal disputes with various social media conglomerates over data privacy and hate speech moderation. The outcome of this investigation could set a significant precedent for how AI-generated content is regulated across the continent.
