Israel Police have announced the arrest of two individuals suspected of espionage and collaborating with Iranian intelligence services.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, law enforcement authorities identified one of the suspects as 19-year-old Sagi Haik from Ness Ziona. Investigations revealed that Haik had been in contact with an Iranian agent for several months prior to his arrest in March. Officials stated that Haik had allegedly agreed to undergo training in an undisclosed Arab country and was instructed to recruit additional individuals to carry out various assignments on behalf of Tehran.
Authorities further noted that the suspect shared sensitive personal information regarding his family members with the foreign agent, subsequently receiving threatening messages from the same contact. During interrogation, Haik reportedly admitted to assisting 21-year-old Assaf Chetrit from Beit Oved in similar activities. Both suspects are expected to be formally charged in a district court on Monday as the investigation into the extent of their cooperation with foreign intelligence continues.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges and the intensification of intelligence warfare in the Middle East. Israeli security services, including the Shin Bet and Israel Police, have frequently reported attempts by Iranian intelligence to recruit Israeli citizens through social media and other digital platforms. These operations often aim to gather intelligence on strategic sites, monitor high-ranking officials, or sow internal discord within the country. The arrest of these young individuals underscores the persistent efforts by regional actors to penetrate domestic security frameworks through unconventional recruitment methods.
