A significant step has been taken to resume scientific research activities in the “Icherisheher” and “Gala” reserves after a long-term hiatus. This initiative marks the beginning of a new phase in the study of Azerbaijan's historical monuments.

The Operative Information Center-OMM was informed about this development by the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

What scientific research is planned for Icherisheher and Gala reserves?

It was reported that on February 27, Rufat Mahmud, Chairman of the Board of the “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration, and Farhad Guliyev, Director of the ANAS Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, inspected historical monuments within the “Gala” State Historical-Ethnographic Reserve.

Based on a joint cooperation agreement for conducting scientific research between the two entities, an initial action project was discussed. This project includes a phased "road map" for involving the “Gala” State Historical-Ethnographic Reserve in archaeological research.

Furthermore, the proposed "road map" for scientific research includes suggestions from the “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration to intensify meetings between the two organizations regarding archaeological excavations at historical sites within Icherisheher.

Icherisheher, often referred to as the Old City, is a unique historical and architectural conservation area in the heart of Baku and was the first location in Azerbaijan to be classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Gala State Historical-Ethnographic Reserve, located on the Absheron Peninsula, serves as an open-air museum preserving the ancient lifestyle and architectural traditions of the region. The resumption of these studies is expected to provide deeper insights into the medieval urban planning and ancient settlement patterns of Azerbaijan.
