Bulgarian Defense Minister Emil Eftimov has stated that there is no evidence suggesting the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that crashed in Bulgarian airspace was intentionally targeting the country.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, preliminary investigations suggest the drone is likely a "Maya"-type decoy UAV, commonly utilized by the Ukrainian military.
The incident occurred on the morning of August 8, when the drone entered Bulgarian airspace from the Romanian border, eventually crashing and exploding in a sunflower field near General Toshevo. The crash site is located just one kilometer from a Bulgarian compressor station of the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline and 200 meters from a corresponding Romanian station, raising security concerns.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev confirmed that the UAV was carrying a significant amount of explosives, causing a powerful blast upon impact. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. In response, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhyi stated that Kyiv did not target Bulgaria and that the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not intentionally direct any assets toward Bulgarian territory. Despite these assurances, the Bulgarian government has summoned the Ukrainian ambassador in Sofia for consultations.
Following the incident, Bulgarian authorities have moved to strengthen the protection of strategic infrastructure, enhance border surveillance systems, and accelerate the procurement of high-precision radar equipment for the military. Such incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges faced by NATO member states bordering conflict zones, where stray munitions or technical malfunctions can pose risks to critical energy infrastructure.
