The pretrial detention period for Ali Kerimli, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (AXCP), has been extended following a court ruling in the capital.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Sabail District Court reviewed a motion filed by investigators from the State Security Service. The court granted the motion, extending the detention of the accused for an additional 4 months.

Ali Kerimli was arrested as part of a high-profile criminal investigation currently being conducted by the State Security Service involving the former head of the Presidential Administration, Ramiz Mehdiyev. According to the investigation, Kerimli faces charges under Article 278.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which pertains to actions aimed at the seizure of state power.

The State Security Service of Azerbaijan is the primary intelligence agency responsible for protecting the constitutional order and national security of the state. Under Azerbaijani law, Article 278.1 carries significant legal weight, addressing attempts to change the constitutional system or seize power through violent means. The ongoing judicial process in Baku continues to examine the evidence gathered by the SSS regarding the alleged coordination between political figures and former high-ranking officials.
