The United States will continue to threaten Russia with new sanctions, although the immediate grounds for implementing these restrictions have not yet materialized, according to political analyst Alexander Asafov. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the expert shared these insights with Lenta.ru while commenting on reports regarding Washington's preparation of additional economic measures against Moscow.
"Washington has action plans for various scenarios, including potential strikes on Iran, sanctions against Russia, and even past discussions regarding Greenland or Gaza. These ideas exist as contingency plans on paper. Is the U.S. considering new sanctions and tariffs? Certainly. Are there calculations that would allow them to implement these without harming their own interests? Most likely, yes," the political analyst stated. He emphasized that US President Donald Trump and the current administration maintain a wide array of economic tools to exert pressure on global adversaries.
However, Asafov assessed that possible restrictions against Russia are currently being viewed primarily as a tool of leverage within the framework of negotiations for a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine conflict. He noted that their ultimate implementation is not guaranteed. "While plans exist on paper, the issuance of a political decision depends on the emergence of appropriate conditions. In my opinion, these conditions have not yet formed, but the threats of sanctions will undoubtedly continue," he added. This strategic ambiguity remains a cornerstone of Washington's foreign policy, particularly as the international community monitors the evolving diplomatic landscape in Eastern Europe.
