A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the Kutahya province in western Turkey on Monday, causing concern among the local population.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) released an official statement regarding the seismic activity. According to AFAD, the underground tremors were recorded at 17:31 local time. The earthquake's epicenter was located at a depth of 9.12 kilometers below the surface.
Turkey is situated in one of the world's most seismically active zones, sitting atop several major fault lines, including the North Anatolian and East Anatolian faults. This geographic positioning makes the country prone to frequent tremors of varying magnitudes. Local authorities in Kutahya are currently monitoring the situation to assess any potential damage to infrastructure, though no immediate casualties or significant structural collapses were reported following the initial shock.
