US Secret Service agents have detained Cole Thomas Allen, who is accused of an attempted assassination against US President Donald Trump.
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that the information was released by CBS News, citing law enforcement sources.
According to the reports, the 31-year-old suspect tripped and fell while attempting to flee the scene after firing a rifle. US Secret Service agents immediately apprehended and disarmed him. To ensure public safety, agents removed the suspect's shirt to verify that he was not carrying any explosive devices.
The incident took place on April 25 during the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel. The shooting occurred while high-ranking officials were in attendance, resulting in one Secret Service agent being wounded. Investigations indicate that Allen had previously booked a room at the hotel, which allowed him to bypass certain security protocols and smuggle the firearm into the building.
Cole Thomas Allen faces several serious charges, including the attempted assassination of the US President, carrying a firearm and ammunition with the intent to commit a felony, and the use of a firearm during a violent crime. The Washington Hilton has historically been a site of high-level political gatherings and was also the location of the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, highlighting the rigorous security measures typically managed by the Secret Service at this venue.
