US President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment with the military alliance during a one-on-one meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Rutte stated in an interview with CNN that following the two-hour meeting at the White House, he understood the President's dissatisfaction with several NATO allies.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt quoted US President Donald Trump as saying of NATO, "They were tested and they failed." The criticism stems from the fact that some NATO member states have refrained from supporting the US military campaign against Iran, either by denying US military aircraft access to their airspace or by declining to assist in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. Following the discussions, the President wrote on the Truth Social platform that NATO was not there when needed, labeling the alliance a "paper tiger" and emphasizing that while European allies rely on security guarantees, they have failed to provide sufficient support for operations regarding Iran.
The high-level meeting between US President Donald Trump and Secretary General Rutte primarily focused on defense industry cooperation, as well as the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. This diplomatic engagement comes at a pivotal time for Transatlantic relations, as the US administration continues to push for increased defense spending and more active strategic participation from European partners. In addition to the talks with the NATO chief, the President also held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday to discuss regional security and bilateral cooperation.
